The 100th Anniversary Celebration Parade of Wat Phothisomphon Project
Context and Rationale On February 10, 2025, the Performing Arts Program, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Udon Thani Rajabhat University, initiated rehearsal activities for a grand traditional parade. The foundation of this project is rooted in the preservation of cultural arts and the application of traditional dance in religious ceremonies (Research and Innovation). The objective was to participate in the procession of the Buddha Rasmi replica and Phra Nirantarai (the temple's principal Buddha image) to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Wat Phothisomphon, a highly revered temple in Udon Thani Province, thereby expressing religious devotion and preserving invaluable cultural heritage.
Activities and Operations Led by Asst. Prof. Narisara Inchang, faculty and students rigorously rehearsed the parade formations and dances on February 10, 2025, at 13:00 hrs. at the multi-purpose dome of the Vocational College. This initiative connects directly with teaching and learning (Teaching) by translating academic choreography into real-world practice. Subsequently, the students actively participated in the official parade (Outreach) on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, starting at 14:00 hrs., moving from Thung Si Mueang to Wat Phothisomphon, engaging numerous government agencies and the general public in the cultural celebration.
Partnerships The success of participating in this commemorative parade reflects internal institutional stewardship (Stewardship) by Udon Thani Rajabhat University (Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences) and strong community partnerships (Partnerships). Collaborating with the Udon Thani Vocational College (which provided the rehearsal venue), government bodies, the monastic community of Wat Phothisomphon, and local citizens, the initiative successfully sustained a large-scale, deeply rooted religious and cultural tradition.
Outcomes The project aims for outcomes covering 1 dimension, which is:
- SDG 11 Dimension (Sustainable Cities and Communities): The project (with activities on February 10-11, 2025) promotes the safeguarding and protection of national and community cultural heritage by integrating traditional dance into major Buddhist commemorative parades (Wat Phothisomphon). By connecting public spaces (Thung Si Mueang) with religious sites, the event fosters social cohesion, spiritual well-being, and the sustainable preservation of the city's unique cultural identity.
