"Development of Mudmee Weaving Techniques Level 5" Training Workshop Project
Context and Rationale From January 31 to February 2, 2025, the Fabric and Textile Creative Design Center (FTCDC) at Udon Thani Rajabhat University organized the training workshop titled "Development of Mudmee Weaving Techniques Level 5," certified by the Thailand Professional Qualification Institute (Public Organization). The foundation of this project is rooted in integrating textile research, design innovation, and advanced vocational skill development (Research and Innovation). The objective was to enhance the competencies of weavers and artisans, empowering them with advanced Mudmee weaving techniques while safeguarding and advancing indigenous cultural wisdom.
Activities and Operations Conducted with 30 participants, the Re-skill/Up-skill/New-skill program covered comprehensive practical modules: preparation of appropriate tools and materials for Mudmee patterns, preparation, binding, and dyeing of Weft yarns for Mudmee weaving, actual Mudmee weaving practices, and self-troubleshooting techniques during the weaving process. Expert instruction was provided by 1) Asst. Prof. Dr. Kitthanat Yananphisit, 2) Aj. Tasaniya Nilrit, and 3) Mr. Chalitrat Suraritthipong. This initiative connects directly with community outreach and lifelong learning (Outreach) as participants successfully executed pattern binding, dyeing, and weaving, with an assignment to complete their designed fabrics independently.
Partnerships The success of this professional training reflects internal institutional stewardship (Stewardship) by Udon Thani Rajabhat University through the FTCDC, alongside robust national partnerships (Partnerships). Collaborating with the Thailand Professional Qualification Institute (TPQI) and esteemed textile experts, the university effectively aligned vocational training with national professional standards to ensure sustainable artisan empowerment.
Outcomes The project aims for outcomes covering 1 dimension, which is:
- SDG 11 Dimension (Sustainable Cities and Communities): The project (held from January 31 to February 2, 2025) promotes the safeguarding and protection of local cultural heritage by delivering advanced Level 5 Mudmee weaving training. This initiative strengthens weaving communities, preserves traditional craftsmanship, and fosters a sustainable grassroots creative economy.
