UDRU Wins Dual Global Honours at Gourmand World Cookbook Awards 2025 in Lisbon, Elevating Isan Gastronomic and Textile Heritage as Global Soft Power
Udon Thani Rajabhat University achieves double victory at the 2025 Gourmand World Cookbook Awards in Lisbon, Portugal, for its publication "MEKONG : Local Wisdom." Winning top global honours in the ASIA Special Awards and Food Culture categories, the project elevates upper Isan local gastronomy and traditional attire across four provinces into international Soft Power, preserving cultural heritage and advancing sustainable urban-community development.
Context & Rationale
This cultural heritage preservation, creative economy, and international Soft Power promotion initiative involved winning two top global awards at the 2025 Gourmand World Cookbook Awards in Lisbon, Portugal, achieved by Udon Thani Rajabhat University for its publication "MEKONG : Local Wisdom." The core rationale of this intervention addresses the strategy of leveraging upper Isan local gastronomy and traditional textile heritage across four provinces—Udon Thani, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, and Nong Bua Lamphu—and elevating them through contemporary international design standards. The project serves as a vital catalyst to protect intangible cultural heritage, stimulate local livelihoods, and advance sustainable, culturally vibrant urban communities.
Activities & Operations
The operational sequence was executed through systematically documenting, designing, and internationalizing regional cultural assets. Key operational workflows included conducting field research to curate traditional culinary wisdom and attire cultures across the four upper Isan provinces, designing a contemporary Photo book utilizing high-standard visual storytelling to communicate local lifestyles, applying global aesthetic and design standards to elevate indigenous food culture, and submitting the publication to the international Gourmand Awards, securing top world honours in both the "ASIA Special Awards" and "Food Culture" categories.
Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships
The successful global recognition of this cultural initiative was built on a multi-sectoral partnership. Spearheaded by Udon Thani Rajabhat University, the project directly collaborated with local community artisans and culinary custodians across Udon Thani, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, and Nong Bua Lamphu, creative design and photography networks, and the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards Committee in Lisbon, Portugal.
Project Outputs
As a direct outcome of these strategic operations, 1 internationally acclaimed publication "MEKONG : Local Wisdom" was produced, winning 2 prestigious world-class awards. Furthermore, the initiative generated a standardized digital archive of upper Isan culinary and textile heritage while establishing a strong local cultural brand ready for global creative tourism and gastronomy markets.
Outcomes
The project aims for comprehensive outcomes across the sustainable development dimension:
SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities): Strengthen efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage (Target 11.4). By raising local Isan culinary and textile wisdom to world-class standards, the project safeguards regional heritage, boosts local economic resilience, fosters community pride, and advances sustainable cultural urban development across Udon Thani and neighboring provinces.
