PWA Udon Thani Welcomes UDRU Engineering Students to Study Solar Rooftop Energy Systems at Ban Nikhom Water Treatment Plant
Provincial Waterworks Authority (Udon Thani Branch) hosts 46 students and faculty members from UDRU Faculty of Technology and Engineering to explore Solar Rooftop power generation technology, design, and management at Ban Nikhom Water Treatment Station.
Context & Rationale
This clean energy education and technological transition initiative centered on an official technical site visit to the Solar Rooftop power generation facility at Ban Nikhom Water Treatment Station, Nikhom Songkhram Subdistrict, Udon Thani Province, conducted on June 18, 2025. The Provincial Waterworks Authority (PWA) Udon Thani Branch (Special Class), led by Assistant Manager Mr. Somsak Chansuwan and Production Chief Mr. Trakulsak Senanikhom, welcomed a 46-member delegation of engineering faculty and students from Udon Thani Rajabhat University (UDRU). The primary rationale of this study tour is to advance engineering education through direct engagement with industrial-scale renewable energy infrastructure. By analyzing solar panel design, installation standards, and energy management in water utility operations, the program enhances technical literacy and promotes low-carbon public utility practices.
Activities & Operations
On June 18, 2025, executive personnel from PWA Udon Thani and Mr. Supan Tonprom, representative from the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), delivered technical briefings and led site inspection operations for the 46 UDRU participants. Key operational activities encompassed technical lectures on solar cell physics, Solar Rooftop structural design and grid connection protocols, energy cost reduction strategies in water treatment plants, and carbon mitigation frameworks. Furthermore, participants conducted physical inspections of solar panel arrays and power inverter systems at the Ban Nikhom facility.
Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships
The successful execution of this renewable energy technology transfer relied on a tri-party state enterprise and higher education partnership. The site host was led by the Provincial Waterworks Authority (PWA) Udon Thani Branch (led by Mr. Somsak Chansuwan and Mr. Trakulsak Senanikhom), operating in technical partnership with the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) (represented by guest speaker Mr. Supan Tonprom), and the Faculty of Technology and Engineering, Udon Thani Rajabhat University (leading 46 faculty members and engineering students).
Project Outputs
As a direct outcome of these joint operations, 46 UDRU engineering students and faculty acquired practical competencies in solar power engineering, utility-scale renewable energy integration, and green infrastructure management. Moreover, the visit established an active knowledge-sharing link between PWA, PEA, and UDRU, providing an operational case study to enrich university engineering curricula and renewable energy research.
Outcomes
The project aims for comprehensive outcomes across 5 key dimensions:
- SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy): (Primary Goal) Promotes the adoption and understanding of renewable solar energy systems (Target 7.2) within public water treatment infrastructure.
- SDG 13 (Climate Action): (Co-Primary Goal) Supports institutional carbon footprint reduction and greenhouse gas mitigation by transitioning water treatment energy reliance toward solar power.
- SDG 4 (Quality Education): Enhances engineering education quality by providing experiential field learning and direct expert mentorship for higher education students.
- SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure): Fosters resilient and sustainable public utility infrastructure through the integration of innovative Solar Rooftop technology.
- SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals): Strengthens multi-stakeholder partnerships bridging a regional university (UDRU) and national public utility enterprises (PWA & PEA) to drive sustainable energy development.
