FTCDC and Udon Thani Rajabhat University Host "ISAN SOUL: Soft Power" Festival to Drive Creative Economy and 5F Cultural Assets

The Fabric and Textile Creative Design Center (FTCDC) at Udon Thani Rajabhat University organizes the "ISAN SOUL: Soft Power" Festival, leveraging Isan cultural heritage across the 5Fs (Food, Fashion, Film, Fighting, Festival) to uplift local livelihoods and preserve urban-community cultural identities.

Context & Rationale

This cultural and economic initiative centered on the "ISAN SOUL: Soft Power" Festival (Isan Soul x2), held from January 24 to 26, 2025, at the lawn area in front of the Fabric and Textile Creative Design Center (FTCDC), Udon Thani Rajabhat University. The opening ceremony was officially presided over by Mr. Suphachai Jaismut, Assistant to the Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI). The primary rationale of this initiative is to leverage Isan cultural heritage and indigenous wisdom through the Creative Economy framework. By enhancing human capital and creating value-added cultural products across the "5F" dimensions (Food, Fashion, Film, Fighting, Festival), the festival aims to boost local household income, distribute economic opportunities, and preserve regional cultural identity sustainably.

Activities & Operations

From January 24 to 26, 2025, a multi-faceted creative festival spanning 5 core dimensions was executed: 1) Fashion (Jan 24): A fashion show showcasing textiles developed from cultural assets; 2) Food (Jan 24): A wellness culinary presentation themed "Let’s Eat Isan Soulful and Wellness Food" by nationally renowned chefs (Chef R and Chef Ploy); 3) Fighting (Jan 24): Muay Thai competitions highlighting martial arts as a cultural tourism product; 4) Film (Jan 25): An outdoor cinema showcase and a film panel featuring award-winning director Chookiat Sakveerakul and international actor Saicheer Wongwirot; and 5) Festival / Light of the Soul (Jan 26): Light and sound cultural performances, an Arts & Crafts market, student design showcases, an amulet market, and live music performances.

Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships

The successful delivery of this regional creative festival relied on an integrated partnership uniting government ministries, higher education institutions, industry professionals, and local creators. The operational host was led by Udon Thani Rajabhat University through FTCDC (represented by President Asst. Prof. Dr. Kanissara Thansunthornsakul), working under policy guidance from MHESI. The coalition secured vital provincial leadership support from Mr. Joompot Wannachat-siri (Governor of Bueng Kan) and Mr. Nattaporn Khamwongpin (Vice Governor of Udon Thani), alongside active participation from the Thai Film Director Association, celebrity chefs, independent artists, faculty members, students, and local residents.

Project Outputs

As a direct outcome of these joint operations, a 3-day creative exhibition and cultural marketplace was successfully established. Moreover, the project produced contemporary Thai textile designs, wellness Isan culinary concepts, and creative platforms showcasing student and artisan handicrafts. Ultimately, it established an active network linking creators, industry experts, and grassroots communities to foster continuous cultural business innovation.

Outcomes

The project aims for comprehensive outcomes across 2 key dimensions:

  • SDG 1 (No Poverty): Drives job creation, vocational empowerment, and income generation for local community members, small-scale entrepreneurs, and students by monetizing cultural heritage within the Creative Economy, reinforcing grassroots financial resilience.
  • SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities): Safeguards, celebrates, and promotes Isan cultural heritage and local identity (Target 11.4) by transforming university public spaces into vibrant cultural hubs, fostering community pride and advancing Udon Thani as a sustainable creative city.
