Opening Ceremony of the ISAN TEXTILE MUSEUM and Northeastern Thai Local Wisdom Exhibition
Context and Rationale On Sunday, February 9, 2025, Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya visited Udon Thani Rajabhat University in Mueang District to officially inaugurate the ISAN TEXTILE MUSEUM and the Fabric and Textile Creative Design Center (FTCDC). The foundation of this project is rooted in textile research, design innovation, and the preservation of local wisdom (Research and Innovation). The initiative aims to elevate Northeastern community handicrafts to global standards and establish the museum as a premier regional learning center for textile cultural arts.
Activities and Operations Conducted at the Multi-purpose Auditorium within the Student Activity Building, the event featured comprehensive exhibitions displaying Thai local wisdom and Northeastern community handicrafts to the public (Outreach). Connecting directly with academic instruction and student development (Teaching), Assistant Professor Phiphop Pinkaew led students majoring in Isan Folk Music (from the Music Program, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences) to perform traditional music at the event. This provided students with prestigious, real-world performance experience during a major royal engagement.
Partnerships The seamless execution of this royal visit reflects the highest level of internal institutional stewardship (Stewardship) by Udon Thani Rajabhat University in mobilizing its facilities—including the Student Activity Building and FTCDC—and personnel. It also highlights robust collaborations (Partnerships) with weaving communities and artisan networks across the Northeast to proudly present their indigenous craftsmanship.
Outcomes The project aims for outcomes covering 1 dimension, which is:
- SDG 11 Dimension: The project (held on February 9, 2025) promotes the safeguarding and protection of cultural heritage by establishing the ISAN TEXTILE MUSEUM and FTCDC as accessible public cultural spaces. Showcasing community handicrafts alongside live traditional folk music preserves regional identity, empowers local artisans, and contributes to the cultural sustainability of the urban community.
