Bueng Kan Innovation College, UDRU Conducts Practical Workshop on Siam Tulip (Patumma) Production Technology to Drive Local BCG Economy

Bueng Kan Innovation College of Udon Thani Rajabhat University organizes a hands-on technology transfer workshop on Siam Tulip (Patumma) production and propagation to create sustainable alternative income for model farmers across 5 districts under the BCG economic model.

Context & Rationale

This agricultural empowerment initiative involved the technology transfer and development project for the production and utilization of Siam Tulip (Patumma) as an alternative income source under the BCG economy model in Bueng Kan Province for 2025. Held on June 9, 2025, at Room 123, Bueng Kan Innovation College, Udon Thani Rajabhat University, the primary rationale of this initiative is to promote Patumma as a viable alternative cash crop aligned with the Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) economic model. By transferring modern agricultural technologies, the project aims to enhance farmers' production capabilities, diversify agricultural systems, and generate stable new income streams to alleviate poverty and sustainably improve local livelihoods.

Activities & Operations

On June 9, 2025, an intensive practical workshop was successfully executed for the targeted farmers. Key operational activities included technological training on the selection and pre-planting management of Patumma rhizomes, hands-on practice in propagation and production, and comprehensive training on good agricultural practices for plot management. Furthermore, the sessions involved collaborative planning with the farmers to establish physical demonstration plots in their local areas, ensuring these sites serve as community learning hubs for future technology dissemination.

Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships

The successful execution of this agricultural technology transfer was driven by a strong collaboration between academia and the local farming sector. The operational core was led by Bueng Kan Innovation College, Udon Thani Rajabhat University, working in direct partnership with a target group of 20 model farmers. These farmers were strategically selected from 5 districts in Bueng Kan Province: Mueang Bueng Kan, Bung Khla, Bueng Khong Long, Seka, and Sri Wilai, forming a core network to pioneer and expand Patumma cultivation across the region.

Project Outputs

As a direct outcome of these operations, 20 model farmers from 5 districts gained comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in Patumma propagation and cultivation. Moreover, the project resulted in the establishment of regional demonstration plots and the formation of a local agricultural network equipped to apply the BCG economy model to generate income and transfer these valuable skills to other community members.

Outcomes

The project aims for comprehensive outcomes across 2 key dimensions:

  • SDG 1 (No Poverty): Reduces the economic vulnerability of farming households by equipping them with new vocational skills and promoting high-value alternative cash crops (Patumma). This serves as a vital mechanism to diversify agricultural income streams and sustainably uplift the grassroots economy.
  • SDG 2 (Zero Hunger / Sustainable Agriculture): While Patumma is an ornamental crop, the initiative strongly supports the sustainable agriculture targets of SDG 2. It enhances agricultural productivity and capacity through the transfer of good plot management technologies and the application of the BCG economic model, enabling farmers to optimize biological resources responsibly and sustainably.
