UDRU and Department of Cultural Promotion Launch Cultural Textile Awards 2025 to Elevate Local Wisdom to Global Standards

Udon Thani Rajabhat University's Fabric and Textile Creative Design Center (FTCDC) partners with the Department of Cultural Promotion to host the Cultural Textile Awards 2025 launch under the theme "Silhouette of the Past." The initiative empowers local weavers, designers, and students to preserve and transform cultural heritage into market-ready sustainable textiles.

Context & Rationale

The launch event for the "Cultural Textile Awards 2025" design competition took place on March 25, 2025, from 09:30 to 15:00 at the Fabric and Textile Creative Design Center (FTCDC), Udon Thani Rajabhat University. Asst. Prof. Dr. Khanisara Thansunthonsakul, President of Udon Thani Rajabhat University, delivered the welcoming address, while Ms. Siwaporn Chantakraiwat, Director of the Cultural Heritage Dissemination and Extension Group from the Department of Cultural Promotion, officially opened the ceremony. The primary goal of this initiative is to safeguard, revitalize, and elevate local Thai textile heritage into internationally competitive creative products.

Activities & Operations

The program featured specialized lectures and design guidance from leading textile experts and designers, including Mr. Wisharawish Akarasantisook, Asst. Prof. Dr. Rawitep Musikaphan, Dr. Korakot Kamsuk, and Lect. Anothai Singkham. The contest is framed around the central concept of "Silhouette of the Past" and comprises three submission categories: Silk, Cotton, and Creative Textiles. Open to local weaving groups, independent designers, and tertiary students with unlimited submissions, the competition emphasizes transforming indigenous cultural inspiration into modern, market-viable, and sustainably producible textile designs.

Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships

This initiative represents a strategic alliance between national cultural authorities, academic centers, and grassroots artisans. Spearheaded by the Department of Cultural Promotion (Ministry of Culture) in collaboration with the Fabric and Textile Creative Design Center (FTCDC) at Udon Thani Rajabhat University, the project engages fashion industry professionals, local weaving cooperatives, and student creators across the region.

Project Outputs

The initiative successfully inaugurated a national textile design competition and delivered an expert-led capacity-building seminar for local artisans and designers. Furthermore, it established a creative design framework that Bridges traditional craftsmanship with commercial viability, paving the way for scalable contemporary Thai textile collections.

Outcomes

The project aims for comprehensive outcomes across the sustainable development dimension:

SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities): Strengthen efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage (Target 11.4). By converting traditional textile heritage into contemporary economic assets, the project fosters cultural preservation, supports local artisanal livelihoods, and builds resilient, culturally vibrant communities.
