UDRU Office of Arts and Culture Hosts Khon Exhibition and Practical Workshop to Honor Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother and Safeguard UNESCO Heritage
Udon Thani Rajabhat University, in collaboration with the Performing Arts Program and the Khon and Thai Music Club, organizes a month-long Khon exhibition and practical workshop to honor Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother and promote UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Context & Rationale
This cultural preservation initiative centered on the "Khon Practical Workshop and Exhibition Project," held from August 1 to 30, 2025, at the Rotating Exhibition Hall (1st Floor), Office of Arts and Culture, Udon Thani Rajabhat University (City Campus). The official opening ceremony took place on August 6, 2025, presided over by President Asst. Prof. Dr. Kanissara Thansunthornsakul. The primary rationale of this month-long project is to honor Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother on the auspicious occasion of Her Majesty's Birthday Anniversary on August 12, 2025, recognizing Her Majesty as the royal patron of Khon performance art. The project aims to establish a learning hub for students and the general public to appreciate, safeguard, and perpetuate Thai Khon, which was inscribed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in November 2018.
Activities & Operations
From August 1 to 30, 2025, a comprehensive exhibition alongside interactive workshops was operationalized. Core activities included royal tribute exhibitions detailing Her Majesty's contributions to Khon, showcases of the SUPPORT Foundation's preservation efforts, and educational displays on Khon performance arts. Furthermore, practical workshop operations featured live demonstrations of Khon facial painting, traditional costume embroidery, headpiece (Siraphorn) crafting, historical lectures, and live Thai classical music performances throughout the event.
Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships
The successful execution of this cultural safeguarding initiative relied on a unified collaboration among academic departments and student organizations. The project was spearheaded by the Office of Arts and Culture, Udon Thani Rajabhat University (led by President Asst. Prof. Dr. Kanissara Thansunthornsakul), working in direct partnership with the Performing Arts Program (Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences) and the Khon and Thai Music Club. The initiative was further enriched by knowledge frameworks from the SUPPORT Foundation and engaged local schools, youth groups, and community members across Udon Thani Province.
Project Outputs
As a direct outcome of these joint operations, a fully functional 1-month learning exhibition on Thai Khon was successfully operated at the Office of Arts and Culture. Moreover, attending students, youth, and citizens acquired hands-on craftsmanship insights (facial painting, embroidery, and headpiece crafting). Ultimately, the initiative generated heightened community awareness and active youth engagement in preserving Thailand's UNESCO-recognized intangible cultural heritage.
Outcomes
The project aims for comprehensive outcomes across 2 key dimensions:
- SDG 4 (Quality Education): Promotes lifelong learning and cultural literacy through free, accessible public learning environments, cultivating deep appreciation and artistic skills related to traditional Thai performing arts among students and community members.
- SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities): Safeguards and preserves global cultural heritage (Target 11.4) by maintaining the vitality of Thai Khon—a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Fostering heritage transmission strengthens cultural identity and supports Udon Thani's development as a sustainable, culturally rich learning community.
