UDRU Technology Clinic Transfers Drinking Water Quality Improvement Technologies to Schools in Phen and Sang Khom Districts

The Science and Technology Center, operated by the UDRU Technology Clinic, conducts field assessments and technology transfers for drinking water purification and water quality testing across three rural schools in Udon Thani Province, ensuring safe drinking water access and community self-reliance.

Context & Rationale

This community outreach and technology transfer initiative centered on the "Drinking Water Quality Improvement and Testing Program," conducted from February 18 to 20, 2025, at Ban Nong Bo School (Phen District), Ban Don Bak School (Sang Khom District), and Ban Don Deua School (Sang Khom District), Udon Thani Province. Operations were led by Mr. Arunsak Chai-ubon, Manager of the Technology Clinic, alongside Mr. Nontawat Buathonglang, Coordinator, representing the Science and Technology Center at Udon Thani Rajabhat University (UDRU). The primary rationale of this initiative is to eliminate health hazards associated with contaminated drinking water in rural educational institutions. By deploying applied science, filtration technologies, and water testing kits, the project builds local capacity and ensures sustainable access to safe drinking water for school communities.

Activities & Operations

From February 18 to 20, 2025, the UDRU Technology Clinic team executed field operations across three rural schools in Phen and Sang Khom districts. Operational activities encompassed baseline assessments of school water purification infrastructure, physical/chemical/microbiological water testing, site-specific water filtration technology transfer, and practical training sessions for teachers and student representatives on water quality monitoring and routine filtration system maintenance.

Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships

The successful implementation of this local technology transfer project relied on a multi-tier partnership bridging higher education, national science agencies, and rural educational networks. The operational core was spearheaded by the Technology Clinic, Science and Technology Center, Udon Thani Rajabhat University (led by Mr. Arunsak Chai-ubon and Mr. Nontawat Buathonglang), operating under the support framework of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), in direct collaboration with school administrators, faculty, and local committees from Ban Nong Bo School, Ban Don Bak School, and Ban Don Deua School.

Project Outputs

As a direct outcome of these joint operations, three rural schools completed water quality assessments and received upgraded, site-appropriate drinking water treatment technologies. Furthermore, local teachers, students, and community staff acquired practical technical skills in operating water testing kits and performing preventive maintenance on filtration systems, establishing an active water quality database for future community water management.

Outcomes

The project aims for comprehensive outcomes across 5 key dimensions:

  • SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation): (Primary Goal) Achieves universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water (Target 6.1) for rural school children through technology-driven water treatment and quality verification.
  • SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being): (Co-Primary Goal) Mitigates water-borne diseases and improves child health outcomes by ensuring safe, disease-free drinking water consumption in educational environments.
  • SDG 4 (Quality Education): Upgrades education facilities to provide safe, inclusive, and health-promotive learning environments (Target 4.a) for students in underserved rural communities.
  • SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure): Drives local infrastructure development through appropriate technology transfer and applied scientific innovation.
  • SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals): Demonstrates effective multi-stakeholder partnerships connecting a regional university (UDRU), national technology networks, and local rural schools to solve community health challenges sustainably.
