Textile Knowledge Exchange Between the Lao Handicraft Association (Lao PDR) and Udon Thani Rajabhat University

Context and Rationale

On January 17, 2025, a delegation from the Lao Handicraft Association of the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR)—led by Ms. Suwita Paseuth, President of the Association; Ms. Chanthao Pathammavong, Honorary President; and Ms. Douangdeuane Bounyavong, SEA Write Award laureate (2006)—visited Udon Thani Rajabhat University to tour facilities and discuss textile initiatives. The foundation of this project is rooted in cultural preservation, local wisdom, and textile design innovation (Research and Innovation). The objective was to visit the Isan Textile Museum, exchange insights on preserving and promoting the textile heritage of both nations, and explore expanded collaborations to ensure the sustainability of traditional handwoven fabrics.

Activities and Operations Conducted on January 17, 2025, the Lao delegation toured the exhibitions and repositories of the Isan Textile Museum. They were officially welcomed and guided by the university's executive team, including Asst. Prof. Dr. Teerayut Pengchai, Vice President and Chairman of the Fabric and Textiles Creative Design Center (FTCDC); Assoc. Prof. Nawa Wongphrom, Head of the Isan Textile Museum; and Assoc. Prof. Pruksmongkol Junpoon. This initiative connects directly with teaching, learning, and community outreach (Teaching & Outreach) by utilizing the museum as an active cultural learning hub to bridge the textile traditions of Thailand and Lao PDR.

Partnerships

The success of this knowledge exchange reflects internal institutional stewardship (Stewardship) by Udon Thani Rajabhat University (via the FTCDC and the Isan Textile Museum) and robust international partnerships (Partnerships) uniting Thai higher education with professional organizations in Lao PDR (Lao Handicraft Association) to jointly advance cultural heritage preservation.

Outcomes

The project aims for outcomes covering 1 dimension, which is:

  • SDG 11 Dimension (Sustainable Cities and Communities): The project (held on January 17, 2025) promotes efforts to protect and safeguard the world's cultural heritage through international collaboration (Thailand and Lao PDR) aimed at preserving, promoting, and advancing handwoven textile wisdom. The Isan Textile Museum serves as a vital learning center that sustains cultural roots and enhances the resilience of local communities.
