Partnership to Accelerate SDG Localization in Thailand

Achieving the SDGs needs investment.

25 August 2025, One of the major challenges in reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is insufficient financial resources, or the fact that existing financial resources are sometimes directed towards activities that hinder sustainable development. With support from the Joint SDG Fund, the Partnership to Accelerate SDG Localization in Thailand has developed financial resource analysis plans for Surat Thani and Udon Thani provinces. These plans help provincial authorities understand how much and what kind of financial planning, allocation, and mobilization are needed to address the gap of financial resources to achieve the SDGs.

.

The seminar “Financing for SDG Localization”, organized by UNDP and UN-Habitat, brought together representatives from Surat Thani and Udon Thani, along with financial economics experts, to analyze why financing is essential for the SDGs, why all sectors need to co-invest, and how the private sector can play a greater role in this development effort.

.

🔹Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rapeepan Paochoo, Prince of Songkla University, Surat Thani Campus, presented the assessment of Surat Thani’s financial mechanisms and proposed approaches for advancing financial mobilization in the province.

🔹Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nopparat Thammavongsa, Udon Thani Rajabhat University, reported on the assessment of Udon Thani’s financial mechanisms and highlighted the budgetary constraints faced by the province.

🔹Nattapong Khumwongpin, Deputy Governor of Udon Thani, and Klannarong Yuttitham, Head of Surat Thani Provincial Office sharing Provincial perspectives on budget allocation for SDG advancement

🔹Dr. Anuk Serechetapongse, Development Economist of UNDP Thailand sharing the idea and the importance of Integrated National Financing Framework (INFF) for sustainable development

🔹Sarinee Achavanuntakul, Researcher on Sustainable Business and Finance reflecting on the role of the private sector in SDG financing and how we can motivate the private sector to invest more in SDGs.

Sustainable development cannot be achieved by any single actor. It requires collaboration, participation, and continuous investment from all sectors to truly move Thailand toward achieving the global SDGs.
