Udon Thani Rajabhat University Showcases Royal Thai Costumes and Local Textiles at Thai Festival in Ho Chi Minh City to Safeguard Cultural Heritage and Build Regional Alliances
Udon Thani Rajabhat University, invited by the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Ho Chi Minh City, showcases Royal Thai costumes and community woven textiles through exhibitions, fashion shows, and traditional performances to preserve local cultural heritage and strengthen international cultural partnerships.
Context & Rationale
This cultural heritage safeguarding and international partnership initiative involved participating in the "Thai Festival," held from May 30 to 31, 2026, in Ho Chi Minh City, Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Udon Thani Rajabhat University was invited by the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Ho Chi Minh City to present Royal Thai costumes, Thai silk, and community-woven textiles to a global audience. The primary rationale of this intervention is to protect, preserve, and promote the intangible cultural heritage of local Thai textile weaving, originally revitalized by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother. Elevating community-level heritage into an international diplomacy arena serves as a strategic catalyst to safeguard local culture, strengthen cross-border partnerships, and empower local creative economies.
Activities & Operations
From May 30 to 31, 2026, the operational sequence was delivered through international cultural exhibitions and runway performances in Ho Chi Minh City. Key workflows included setting up an exhibition showcasing Royal Thai costumes alongside local community textiles. During the opening ceremony, the delegation hosted a fashion show featuring Royal Thai costumes and contemporary Thai fabrics, accompanied by a traditional dance performance titled "Fon Sirakan Botmal Sirikit Phramata," honoring Her Majesty Queen Sirikit's contributions to Isan woven textiles.
Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships
The successful execution of this international cultural diplomacy project was built on a multi-stakeholder and cross-departmental coalition. Spearheaded by Udon Thani Rajabhat University—integrating the Performing Arts Program, Product Design Program (Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences), Fabric and Textile Creative Design Center (FTCDC), and the International College—the delegation partnered directly with the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Ho Chi Minh City as the primary diplomatic facilitator, alongside local Isan weaving communities providing authentic cultural textiles.
Project Outputs
As a direct outcome of these strategic operations, 1 international Thai textile exhibition and fashion show was delivered in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Additionally, the project showcased local Thai silk and honorific dance performances to an international audience, while establishing an active cultural diplomacy network linking UDRU, Thai diplomatic missions, and international communities in Vietnam.
Outcomes
The project aims for comprehensive outcomes across 2 key dimensions:
SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities): Strengthens efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage (Target 11.4). Promoting Royal Thai costumes and indigenous Isan weaving techniques at an international festival safeguards intangible cultural heritage and sustains local traditions.
SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals): Enhances the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development, complemented by multi-stakeholder partnerships that mobilize and share knowledge and expertise (Target 17.16). Collaborating with the Royal Thai Consulate-General builds strong cross-border partnerships, driving cultural diplomacy and opening international pathways for community-based textile artisans.
