UDRU Bueng Kan Education Center Implements Campus Wastewater Recycling and Reclaimed Water Irrigation Infrastructure

Udon Thani Rajabhat University Bueng Kan Education Center advances sustainable water resource management by establishing a biological retention pond system to collect, treat, and recycle domestic wastewater from student dormitories and faculty residences for campus landscape irrigation.

Context & Rationale

This campus sustainability and circular water management initiative centered on the "Wastewater Recycling and Resource Management Project" at Udon Thani Rajabhat University (UDRU), Bueng Kan Education Center. The primary rationale of this initiative is to optimize campus water consumption and minimize environmental contamination. By establishing a dedicated retention pond system to collect greywater and domestic wastewater generated from student dormitories and faculty housing, the center treats and reclaims water for campus landscape irrigation, reducing reliance on freshwater supplies and creating an eco-friendly campus model.

Activities & Operations

The Bueng Kan Education Center executed structural water management operations. Operational activities encompassed connecting drainage networks from dormitory and residential units to a designated biological retention pond, utilizing natural sedimentation and stabilization processes to treat wastewater, installing pump and irrigation pipelines to distribute reclaimed water across campus gardens and agricultural demonstration plots, and monitoring water quality to ensure safe environmental reuse.

Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships

The successful implementation of this circular water initiative relied on internal governance and green campus partnerships. The operational lead was driven by UDRU Bueng Kan Education Center (administration, physical plant, and environmental facility staff), working in direct alignment with the Office of the President, Udon Thani Rajabhat University, and the UDRU Green Campus Policy Committee.

Project Outputs As a direct outcome of these joint operations, the Bueng Kan Education Center established an operational wastewater retention and natural treatment pond system. Moreover, the campus achieved 100% recycling of residential greywater for landscape irrigation, significantly reducing municipal water consumption for green space maintenance and eliminating untreated wastewater discharge into local surrounding ecosystems.

Outcomes

The project aims for comprehensive outcomes across 5 key dimensions:

  • SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation): (Primary Goal) Substantially increases water-use efficiency and safe water reuse (Target 6.3 & Target 6.4) by recycling domestic wastewater for campus irrigation and landscape preservation.
  • SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production): (Co-Primary Goal) Drives circular economy principles through water recycling, minimizing resource depletion, and preventing environmental water pollution.
  • SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities): Enhances sustainable campus infrastructure and expands urban green spaces using reclaimed water irrigation systems.
  • SDG 13 (Climate Action): Builds institutional climate resilience against drought and water scarcity through alternative recycled water reservoirs.
  • SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals): Strengthens internal green campus governance and environmental management partnerships across university campuses in Bueng Kan Province.
